About Bible Memory

Helping believers hide God's Word in their hearts

Hi, I'm Michael Engelbrecht. I built Bible Memory because I've experienced firsthand the power of memorizing God's Word.

Why This Matters

God truly does bring the beautiful promises of His Word to our minds exactly when we need them most—if we take the time and discipline to hide them in our hearts in the first place.

I've seen this truth play out in my own life countless times. The verses I've memorized don't just stay on a page—they become living words that surface in moments of need, bringing comfort, wisdom, and strength.

The Journey

Fifteen years ago, I took a Scripture memory course with Dan Vis at FAST Missions. His course included a simple online tool for Bible memorization, and I found it incredibly helpful. But when the course ended, I wanted to keep using it—and I wanted features that weren't included.

So I built my own simple web app and used it faithfully for many years. It did what I needed: helped me memorize verses using spaced repetition and kept my progress organized.

Time to Modernize

In 2025, I was inspired to get back into regularly memorizing NEW Bible verses. But I found myself fighting with my old web app, and I realized it had aged. It was clunky to manually enter new verses. Technology had moved forward, and my tool hadn't kept up.

So during a holiday break, I decided to rebuild it from the ground up—this time as a modern, offline-first Progressive Web App that could work beautifully on any device, anywhere, with or without internet. The AI coding tools available today make a bit difference, and enabled me to build Bible Memory in just a few days.

Why Open Source

After spending several days building Bible Memory, something became clear: this shouldn't just be for me. If this tool could help me hide God's Word in my heart, maybe it could help others too.

So I invested a couple of extra days to share it - making it available to anyone who wants to use it. There are certainly lots of other tools out ther for memorizing Scripture, but hopefully this one will be a blessing to someone else - maybe someone like you! 🙂

I don't have much time to maintain it, but it's free and open source and anyone can contribute.

  • You can see exactly what the code does
  • No hidden tracking or data selling
  • Free forever (no premium tiers)
  • Community can contribute improvements

The technology stack: A Progressive Web App (PWA) using Vue, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind, Dexie, and a minimal PHP + SQLite synchronisation back-end.

My Hope for You

Whether you're memorizing your first verse or your hundredth passage, I hope this tool helps you treasure God's Word in your heart—and experience the joy of having it come alive exactly when you need it most.

"I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
